I have a lot of people living in my head…
Ha, what a hook, right? To some of you, I’m sure your first reaction was, “Thank God he finally admits it!” But that’s not what I’m talking about here.
There are a lot of people who live in my head rent free. Chances are, there are people who do the same in yours.
You know what I’m talking about: Those people who have hurt you; who have abandoned you. It could be a family member, a friend, even a failed relationship. Whatever the case is, you’ve held on to feelings of pain while they have moved on with their lives. They have taken residence in your brain whether they know it or not. At the craziest times, they’ll pop out of the room you’ve made for them to remind you of your failure or how they hurt you. They live there for weeks, months, sometimes years without you ever actually seeing them. They’re there when you try to go to sleep, when you are alone, sometimes when you’re on a deadline to finish a play (maybe that last one is strictly mine).
It’s the worst feeling in the world; only made worse when you give them their eviction notice and they refuse to leave.
I have those people living in my head. Constantly reminding me of what could have been, what I should have done. I should have tried harder with this person, I should have told a person how I felt about them sooner. Or, even worse, I hear the words I long to hear from some people that never came. Again, chances are you deal with this as well.
And if you do, I think it’s time for some spring cleaning (“Gasp!” You’re probably saying to yourself right now. “That’s the title of this blog!”. Full circle guys.)
I don’t know who might have taken up residency in your head, but whoever it is it’s time to tell them to leave. Take time today to do a little cleaning in your mind. Don’t let what-ifs or should-haves keep you from what you can accomplish today.
This year has been insanely tough for me. And a lot of it is I allowed those people to live in my head and I’ve allowed their voices to drown out my own. It’s easy to do. But we also have the power to get rid of them. Send them packing and remind yourself of who is in charge of you: YOU
So, join me won’t you? Take time out today to do some spring cleaning. Don’t put it off another day! Serve those eviction notices and take the steps today to make yourself the best you can be.
And when you’re done cleaning up, come by and help me. I need all the help I can. 🙂
